1965 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible
For the Bonneville moniker, the designers got it right just out of the gate. Bunkie Knudson's writing implement was magically guided by fate and his talent which was on loan from God when he penned this design. By 1959 and early 1960's this was dominating NASCAR, NHRA, and Pikes Peak with its perfect combination of style and power. This was also the introduction of the "wide track" era going on the theory that a wider stance offers up more stability, and it worked!
I think I've found my and hopefully your next obsession! One cool cat, or I would better be served by saying one cool bonne, gracing your eyes and our hallways with a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible for your viewing pleasure and up for consignment. This glitzy line topper is long and sleek and has the mid century modern design to die for. Also, one of the nicest, and longest asses available here at Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
Montero Red covers the big steel panels of this large and in charge cruiser, complete with fender skirts. Panels are arrow straight, paint is great, and there is a lot of it to look at. From the side view it appears as a 2-door capsule that could have had Buck Rogers swoop up to the moon to have lunch and return on the same day. With a large open passenger compartment, and long, long trunk and hood and inset bumpers in chrome, it could be moving while standing still. A white canvas convertible top in beautiful condition covers the compartment during bad weather and moves up and down seamlessly. Adding to the spaceship mystique are the dark gray turbine style wheel covers with 8 lugs. A stainless rocker trim which continues on the rear quarters and adds a nice highlight to the bottom end of this Han Raider Mid Century Modern spaceship, sans death-rays but stacked dual head lighting and split grill instead. And no fins! Just pure wide track excitement which is what the ads of the day stated. Pure pulp fiction.
Interior
Pristine red door panels made up of tuck and roll vertical ribs and some nice trimming along with shiny window cranks, a split back front bench, and another bench for the back are all in nicely preserved vinyl and make up the passenger compartment. A wood appliqu dash with plenty of chromed highlighting is clean, and all functioning. The top dash is covered with deep red crack free padded vinyl. With the wood applique' and thin bezels throughout, along with a shiny chromed and red steering column this car is a futuristic exercise in design and elements and presents beautifully. Nice red carpet covers the floors, and Pontiac arrowheads are on the seat tub edges and floor mats. Also noted is a very nice red and clear plastic rimmed steering wheel.
Drivetrain
A pop of the large and long hood and we are in the presence of a completely restored engine bay in shiny black. Within which is a correct YE stamped 389ci V8. This steel blue block is topped with chromed valve covers, and a black air cleaner, and has nice supple shiny rubber hoses, like new wires, and some snazzy red spark plug connectors showing up just under the valve covers. Below the air cleaner is a 4-barrel carburetor and strapped to the back is a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission. Power goes rearward to a 10-bolt rear. Let's speed up to that incoming planet and save the earth with the ray gun!
Undercarriage
With laser like precision the undercarriage which has been the beneficiary of a full frame off restoration the undercarriage is clean and mean with no rust seen all bathed in red pristine. All structurally sound underneath, and noted independent coil springs upfront, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear, provide the glide ride this long car is famous for. Power drum brakes are given to all 4 corners, and all is well underneath. Nary even road dirt, hinting she may be a trailer queen or just very well kept.
Drive-Ability
Past history allowed me to step to the front of the test drive line as when I was 16 this was the family car, and I loved every minute of it, mainly because of those 2 large benches and my 15 year old arm candy. This one started right up, idled smoothly, and when shifted into gear took off with V8 4-barrel power. It is a large car, and will not carve a curve, but then again it is a cruiser with plenty of cubic inches to romp around in and utilize under the hood. A super smooth ride, this car will literally cruise all day at highway speed and can carry a family on long trips. While on one, don't forget to pull over, have a sandwich and pop the hood for the engine to cool faster before returning to the interstate. Is that a 60's thing?
All in all a nice ride, great paint, a stunner of an undercarriage, clean chrome, and a sparkling engine which runs like a Swiss watch. Plenty of room to play in, and the iconic Pontiac look with its split grille, "beak" and stacked headlights, and a wonderful interior to boot. Let's put the white top down and begin to impress the neighbors during a low speed cruise on the boulevard.
