The car is set up to be a dependable driver. I’ve put 5,000 miles on it this year. The real issue is rust. Being a NE car for a lot of its life, and even after the repair in 2011, the rear quarters, front wings and upper rockers began to rust/rot again. Interestingly enough, the floors, cowl, spare tire well and structural components such as the frame rails and strut/shock towers show no evidence of rust. To repair this to a high standard is a project that I’m unwilling to take on. It would require fabrication work and/or replacement body panels. Close-up photos of all rust can be found in the gallery.
Important Points:
– Recent valve adjustment.
– There is a slight oil leak from the oil cooler lines
– The transmission output shaft and shift selector seals are leaking
– The differential is dry as it was recently resealed
– The idle oscillates between 675-750 and is lumpy at times.
– The gearbox shifts well, but would benefit from a short shift kit and/or stiffer bushings.
– The clutch grabs low, but does not slip or chatter.
– The brakes stop even and clean, the pedal feels firm.
– The steering is tight.
– The suspension is quiet and performs as it should newer components.
– The gauge cluster is fully operational and no warning lights are present, however the service interval lights cannot be reset
– There is a newer Kenwood XDC head unit with bluetooth and a microphone installed.
– The heat works and modulates as necessary.
– The air conditioning is non-operational. It was charged with R12 in 2020 but could not build pressure. The compressor spins freely.
– Oil always changed with Penngrade 1 20w-50 during my ownership.
– PS fluid is of proper Dexron III specification.
– The sunroof opens and closes quickly, but does not stop correctly when fully opened.
– All windows and central locks are operational.
– There is a slight wind leak in the passenger side door seal, but the car does not leak water when washed.
– Cruise control is operational.
