Description
circa early 1800's **WONDERFUL HISTORY**Stamped "Rhenser Mineralbrunnen", ANTIQUE Rhine-German Stoneware Salt Glazed Red-Brick Clay Mineral Jug Marked N10
These Large Relics are hard to find, it is no surprise though, through Germany's desimating war, normal use, time and improvements in bottling, these items are now so few in number.

HISTORY:
The molds for this jug style were used by various merchants; This jug being made from Red-brick Clay tells us the locale and period.
The Rhenser Mineralbrunnen co. origin was in the "wholesale business for medicinal and mineral fountains". Appearing to have formed in the early 18th century (or earlier) the method of providing their mineral water to the public was at that time was by packaging their product in this crudely hand made stoneware salt glazed clay jug.
Locally the refreshment would be delivered weekly to your door. As the product was consumed you would place the empty containers back into the wooden crate, by using this "recycling" method, the delivery driver would replace what was used. Later he would refill the empty jugs to be delivered once again.
PERSONAL NOTE:
As of the early 90's and stationed in Germany, I know this method of delivery was still being utilized by local breweries. Mine happened to be Bitten Burger, aka Bitburger, now sold here in the U.S.!
DATING THE JUG:
In 1922 the Rhenser Mineralbrunnen company began working with logistical wholesaling merchant Dr. M. Lehmann and JF Heyl & Co. It is at this time that bottling and shipping was streamlined and improved. Subsequently for us, this appropriately dates our jug to prior to 1922.
TODAY:
Ultimately the Rhenser Mineralbrunnen company is independently operating under the Nestle Corporation, albeit through a series of independent German entities.
THE JUGS CONDITION:
Still Functional as Intended! The Jug Still Holds Fluid Well, No Crazing, Leaks Or Cracks.
The handle was classically affixed after the jug was formed but prior to the kiln. It shows how a simple 1" strip of clay that was pressed into the jug body, then rounded, curved and molded into place, thus creating the handle.
During the kiln firing the top left half inch of the handle pulled away during the firing/drying process. This is COSMETIC only. This small defect does not keep it from it's intend use, it was and still is functional.
Please View All Photos Carefully!
Lending to it's authenticity, it is apparent the making was crude, true to the time period.
Excellent for Us and Ultimately Giving Us a Beautiful Example Of History...
